The story of Caldwell begins with its founder, Alexander Duffes. In 1883, Duffes became aware of a railroad company's plan to extend their line through what is now known as Caldwell. He saw this as an opportunity for growth and development and quickly purchased land along the proposed route. Duffes then laid out plans for a town site and began selling lots at low prices to attract settlers. In August 1883, construction on the Oregon Short Line Railroad began and by November of that year, trains were running through Caldwell. This event marked the official founding date of Caldwell as a city. With easy access to transportation via railroads and fertile land for agriculture, Caldwell grew rapidly over the next few decades. The first school was built in 1884 followed by churches and businesses soon after. By 1890, there were over 1,000 residents living in Caldwell. One significant event that shaped early life in Caldwell was when it became home to one branch of The Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints (LDS) or commonly known as Mormons from Utah who came seeking new lands for farming opportunities following persecution against them from local government officials there due to their polygamous practices at that time period).
